7 Benefits from Playing Math Card Games

Sharing is caring!

Over our homeschooling journey I have seen many benefits from playing math card games. Math is not a subject that I have to drag my kids to do, especially when there is a game involved. We have been through a couple different math curriculum, but have been with RightStart Math for almost 2 years.

We continue to LOVE it!

RightStart is comprehensive, and my boys learn a lot (Let’s face it….so do I). Honestly, the games are what seals the deal for me. The brain is such an amazing tool, but if the brain isn’t engaged or is disinterested nothing is gained.

Here are 7 benefits that come from playing math card games that I have seen over the past couple years with my boys. These benefits are the main reason we love RightStart and continue to use it (If your interested, Here is a more in depth article on why we love RightStart Math).

Math card games are perfect for instilling math concepts! 7 Benefits of math card games that will help your child become better in math. It will help your child love math because they are playing a game instead of doing tedious repetitive worksheets!

HERE ARE 7 BENEFITS that come from PLAYING MATH CARD GAMES

#1 – Teaches math while you play

There are lots of giggles going on when we play these games. There are times when it is just myself and one child, but often times another child joins in on the fun game. Most games are simple and easy to understand. Other games I have to read the instructions over and over again, and then play the game to find out really how to play it. Once you get it though, it is simple.

#2 – Competition is good for the brain

It is amazing what happens to your brain when there is some competition going on. It is a game changer! All of a sudden math becomes a game and they want to do their best at it. Competition stretches you which leads us to..

#3 – Challenges the mind

I love it when I see my child closing his eyes to try and figure out an answer. There are some games that they are incredibly slow as we start out, but as we continue to play they get better and better. They begin to master it without them even knowing it. Their brain is challenged and they are having fun while doing it.

#4 – Helps instill a concept

When a concept isn’t sticking, a couple games will help instill that concept. When my oldest was struggling with his 6 times tables, we found a game he liked and we played it over and over again. We would play the best out of 7 so that we got lots of repetition which leads us to…

#5 – Interesting Repetition

Repetition is the key when it comes to memorizing facts. Games are a perfect avenue to do this. Many times my boys are asking to play the game over and over again. I am the one usually saying it is time to stop. The great thing about these games is that you can have an older sibling help play games with the younger ones. This is a huge benefit for both of these kids.

#6 – Valuable time spent with Mom

This is one of my favorite times of day! I love taking the time and having an excuse to play games with my boys! They aren’t games that I dread to play, but challenge the mind and is worthwhile. There have been many times that we have been so into a game that we are holding our breath to see who wins. We yell, squeal and giggle together. Whenever someone wins, a victory dance usually follows.

Great times and great memories……all while doing math! Who would’ve thought that could even be?

#7 – Can be used with any mathematics program

The great thing about these math card games is that it can be used with any program you are using. I use both the curriculum and the games from RightStart. The games are incorporated into each lesson and is part of the reason why the lessons are longer. If there are days that we don’t have time, we will teach the concept one day and play the game the next day.

Another option is to have your older kids play the games with your younger kids.
