Unisom and Vitamin B6 for Morning Sickness

Unisom

Unisom is a drug used primarily to help people who struggle sleeping at night. It is known to be a non-habit forming sleeping aid. Another use is to help pregnant woman with morning sickness (nausea and vomiting). This drug works much like Benadryl. It blocks histamines and makes you sleepy.

If you are familiar with the Pregnancy Categories, Unisom is a Pregnancy category B. This means that by the FDA it is likely to be safe because they have not seen any adverse reactions with its use. The other categories are A, B, C, D, and X. The X category means that it is known to cause fetal abnormalities and problems with either baby or mom.

Healthline.com said, “combination therapy of both vitamin B-6 and doxylamine, which is sold over the counter as Unisom SleepTabs, has been recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for treating morning sickness in the first trimester.

Take 10 to 25 mg of vitamin B-6 three times a day, every six to eight hours. Take 25 mg of Unisom SleepTabs once before bed.

As you experience hormone changes, a growing belling, restless legs, back pain, a squished bladder etc, it makes it more and more difficult to get a decent night sleep. Your morning sickness has become all day sickness and is worse from lack of sleep. Unisom is a good option to try if your doctor clears everything else first.

Vitamin B6

This is a water soluble vitamin that is very important in your pregnancy whether you are experiencing morning sickness or not. It aids in helping develop the brain and nervous system and it can prevent low birth weight and eczema in your baby as well.

Vitamin B6 can help relieve morning sickness during your pregnancy, so talk with your doctor about the dosage you will need to best care for yourself and baby!

Mothers first hand experiences using Unisom and Vitamin B6 for morning sickness

Mama #1 –

I take a compounded version of the B6 with Unisom. It is a game changer for me. It helps me sleep and if I forget to take it at night I feel awful. I took it with baby number 3 and this pregnancy. I took Zofran with my first 2 pregnancies and I feel this works better than the Zofran.

Mama #2 –

At I started taking Unisom about 5 weeks when my morning sickness kicked in. I took it until 15 weeks when it subsided.
It definitely helped me. I took it at night when I took my prenatals. Unison KNOCKS ME OUT so it’s the only time I could take it. It started relieving my morning sickness within the first 48 hours.

Mama #3 –

I started taking it at 9 wks and I also took it with B6. My OB said to take it at bed to feel better the next day and I felt a lot better! I took 1/2 a Unisom and a whole Vitamin B6 😊

Mama #4 –

You definitely need to take the unisom at night otherwise you are a walking zombie. (No one mentioned that to me ) 😂

Mama #5 –

I have 6 kids I took it with all of them. I started taking it about 8-10 weeks some of them all the way through until delivery some just until 5 months or so. I took it right before I went to bed. It helped a lot with morning sickness.

Mama #6 –

I’m a nurse at a Women’s Health clinic. Remember, you don’t want to start any medication, even over the counter, without consulting your doctor but here is what we discuss with our patients: 1/2 tab Unisom and Vitamin B6 50mg every 4-6 hours. You should not take more than 200 mg Vit B6 in a 24 hour period. Remember Unisom will most likely cause drowsiness so don’t drive or do anything potentially dangerous until after you know how the medication affects you. For some women this combination works very well for morning sickness, for others it doesn’t so you just have to work with your doctor to find out what works for you.

Mama #7 –

I took Unisom at night starting at about six weeks. I took half a Unisom, otherwise I would be in a coma the next morning. I had to take Zofran during the day because Unisom/B6 was not enough and made me drowsy. It definitely did help me and as a bonus it helped me with my allergies because Unisom is an antihistamine.

Mama #8 –

I started at 8 wks took 1/2 pill with a B6 vitamin. Didn’t really help though.

Mama #9 –

Started taking Unisom at 5 weeks for nausea. Half a pill before bed. Never combined it with Vitamin B6. It has helped so much with the morning sickness. I can feel when it starts to wear off around 3 in the afternoon. The nausea comes back full force. But it’s sooo nice to have some relief in the mornings. That’s when I try to do some light exercise to keep my body from being so sedentary.

Mama #10 –

I started taking an off brand of Unisom at about 7-8 weeks. I took the B6 with it on and off (the smell/taste if B6 made me really nauseous). I took it at night before bed and it definitely helped lessen my morning sickness during the mornings. It didn’t go away completely, but it wasn’t nearly as bad.

I’m a firm believer that you should try everything natural at first. Here is a great list of 41 foods good for morning sickness from moms just like you. I hope this helps. Morning sickness can take a lot out of you physically as well as emotionally. This article talks about dealing with first trimester blues.
