Dessert for Breakfast and other Confessions

Sharing is caring!

Dessert for breakfast? No worries. Motherhood isn't about perfection. It's about NOT GIVING UP!

Yes. The title says it all. Have you ever had one of those mornings? My kids stayed up too late last night so I was struggling to get them up for their summer music class this morning. My 5 yr old’s hair was a tangled mess and I was ‘trying’ to make it look half-way decent. During the hair drama, my 2 yr old decided it would be a good idea to help himself to the tomatoes on the counter. After all, who doesn’t love tomatoes for breakfast, right? 🙂 My 7 yr old was throwing a fit because someone stole his otter pop that he hid in the freezer last night.

So yes. I had strawberry shortcake for breakfast. I also enjoyed every single bite as I tried to tone out the utter chaos going on around me.

I dream of being that ‘perfect’ mom who wakes up before her kids instead of to her kids. I dream of a perfectly organized home that everyone keeps organized, and perfectly balanced meals that are served to children who don’t fight with each other at dinner.

I can dream, right?

Maybe that kind of life exists in other homes, but it does NOT exist in mine. But then, if life was as perfect as I wanted, where would I ever learn anything? Thank goodness God has a sense of humor (at least I hope he does) because I’m sure I’ve given him good reason to laugh in my lifetime. I imagine him saying,

“Don’t worry Katie. I’m laughing with you, not at you!”

Phew! Thank goodness! I’m sure I already have enough people laughing at me. 🙂

I’ve learned through the past 12 years of motherhood that being a good mother doesn’t necessary look a certain way. It doesn’t mean I need to be perfect. Being a good parent sometimes just requires that I keep trying. It’s only when I completely give up that I have failed. I love this quote by Nelson Mandela:

““I’m no saint—that is, unless you think a saint is a sinner who keeps on trying.”

So today I had dessert for breakfast, tomorrow I will go back to my normal nutritious smoothie. Oh yes, and maybe I’ll have my 2 yr old dressed before 10am.

The silly kid could care less if he has pants on. He just wanted his shoes on!

I was thinking how great it would be if I could legally walk around with no pants. Life would sure be a lot more cool and comfortable!

I’m grateful for new moments and new days to change. The important thing is to move forward and not dwell on the past, right?
